TA Instruments open a new dimension in materials analysis with the first commercial micro-thermal analyser. The µTA 2990 acts as both an atomic force microscope, imaging the sample surface to high resolution, and a miniature thermal analyser, performing simultaneous thermomechanical analysis and modulated differential thermal analysis on a microscopic scale. Measurements, in programmed heating or isothermal modes, can be made over a broad temperature range (-70 to 500°C), whilst high heating rates enable rapid characterisation. The µTA 2990 maps thermal conductivity, diffusivity and expansion, transition temperatures and visco-elasticity. The technique is already being applied in the fields of polymers, electronics, pharmaceuticals, foods and textiles.
